People’s environmental concerns
Why we monitor people's environmental concerns
Waikato Regional Council needs to understand the range of concerns and perspectives of the residents they serve. Understanding the biggest concerns Waikato residents have about the environment supports strategic planning.
This indicator monitors what those surveyed identify as the most important environmental issue facing the Waikato region today.
Results - data and trends
In April to May 2022, 1026 people throughout the region responded to the Your Environment - What Matters survey. Those surveyed identified what they thought was the single most important environmental issue facing the Waikato region today?
The environmental issues of greatest concern in 2022 are:
- Water issues (60 per cent), within this theme water quality was the greatest concern followed by water shortage/availability.
- Climate change (13 per cent), within this theme drought/temperature/lack of rainfall was of greatest concern, closely followed by water availability and flooding.
- Waste (9 per cent) within this theme dumping and recycling/waste management issues were of greatest concern.
- Infrastructure pressures due to population growth/urban development (7 per cent).
Sixty per cent of respondents identified water issues as the most important environmental issue facing the region today. Included in this theme was water quality (35 per cent), water supply/shortages (14 per cent), water management (4 per cent) and general comments about the importance of water for life on earth, human survival, and quality of life (4 per cent).
For others climate change was the issue of greatest concern. Thirteen percent identified climate change as the most important issue with many commenting on drought, reduced rainfall and water availability, flooding, and transport.
Nine per cent thought waste issues were of greatest concern (including recycling and waste management, dumping and plastic waste).
Infrastructure pressures were identified by 7 per cent. This theme includes housing and transport issues related to growth and/or population pressures as well as losses of productive land and vegetation due to sprawl and/or intensification of urban development.
Besides being the most important environmental issue for the majority of those surveyed, water quality and availability was a sub theme of the other key themes of climate change, waste, and infrastructure pressures. Drought and water availability was a key concern of those who identified climate change as the most important issue. Increased demand and competition for water and the need to upgrade water infrastructure was a key sub theme of those identifying infrastructure pressures as the most important issue. Waste and/or rubbish entering waterways was also frequently mentioned by those who identified waste as the most important issue.
