What we’re doing

Waikato Regional Council has made a commitment to the community of the Wharekawa Coast to establish a formal river and catchment management programme for the area.

The need for a "river management work programme" was identified as a key strategic action in the Wharekawa Coast 2120 Community Plan, which was developed after a series of significant flood events and adopted by this council, Hauraki District Council and Waikato District Council in late 2023.

The management of rivers, catchments and streams is primarily the responsibility of regional councils, with the works funded by:

  • general rates
  • targeted rates
  • paid by property owners benefitting from, or contributing to, the need for the specific works
  • landowner contributions.

To enable a management programme for Wharekawa Coast, the council is developing a rating classification, which will then become part of the 2025/26 Annual Plan formal consultation process.

In the meantime, the council is informally engaging with the community about what river and catchment management is all about, and how that work may be funded.
